As part of its commitment to providing relevant and high quality services based on best practice methods, Foodbank WA regularly evaluates the School Breakfast Program. Where possible, research is also carried out into areas of specific interest.
School Breakfast Program Research & Evaluation
School Breakfast Program Coordinator’s Survey Report
The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is evaluated annually via an online survey. The aim of the evaluation is to assess the impact of the SBP on schools and students, as well as to identify aspects of the program that are working well or that may require improvement.

School Breakfast Program Case Study Research
Foodbank WA commissioned an independent research agency (TNS) during 2010 to assist us in the understanding how well the School Breakfast Programs (SBP) are working in terms of providing positive outcomes for children, teachers, parents and the school community. To achieve this, TNS used a Case Study approach to get more in-depth information rather than a big questionnaire.
There are a number of different models for running SBPs – from parent facilitated, external volunteer facilitated, school-lead and teacher-lead scenarios. In each of these models, it was consistently expressed that there was a wide range of children reached with diverse needs, ranging from the physical need of simply being fed to a variety of emotional needs which had resulted in a lack engagement in school activities.
All those participating in the case studies agreed that SBPs are of high importance (fulfilling a range of needs), and high value (delivering a range of benefits). There is a strong desire for an ongoing commitment to SBPs.

Foodbank WA Schools Mid-Year Survey
A short mid-year survey was sent to all SBP Coordinators in June 2011. The aim of the survey was to:
-
Measure awareness of the Department of Education's Healthy Food and Drink Policy within SBP Schools;
-
Gauge knowledge of the Food Sensations and Choose to Move programs provided as part of the Healthy Food for All Program; and
-
To measure the effectiveness of current communication and information strategies used by Foodbank WA
